More savings, more convenience, less traffic.

Those are among the expected benefits of the new Barbados Bay Jetty, which received its first barge in over 15 years on Saturday (January 26) from Trinidad.

Tobago also shipped over 2,200 metric tonnes of aggregate to Trinidad, which will bring in $300,000 in revenue.

The journey of the barge provided an opportunity for both Studley Park Enterprise Limited (SPEL)—the company responsible for the jetty—and contractors to explore appropriate mooring options for the location.

The new jetty means land-based transportation costs will be reduced, which will increase product competitiveness. This arrangement will also ease the traffic congestion being experienced at the Scarborough Port.

In the next few weeks, SPEL will test its mooring options under varying conditions. The official commissioning ceremony for the jetty will take place in March.
