Tobago is being cleaned up—literally—thanks to a renewed drive to rid the island of derelict vehicles.

The Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment and the Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development are teaming up to have abandoned vehicles removed from the island’s roads and public spaces.

The move aims to protect Tobago’s environment, and enhance its tourism product.

The Infrastructure Division has advised residents who own derelict vehicles, or vehicles in a state of disrepair, to have them removed from public spaces. This includes the roadside or empty lots.

The Division has also reminded the public that it is an offence to abandon derelict vehicles in public spaces. This is in accordance with sections 9 to 11 of the Litter Act.

The fine for breaching the Act is $1,000. Following conviction for this offence, there is an additional fine of $200 per day for every day that the abandoned vehicle is not removed.
