Electrical Inspectorate

Overview

The Electrical Inspectorate Unit is responsible for the inspection and certification of electrical works in Tobago. The Electrical Inspectorate Unit is staffed by a team of qualified, experienced electrical professionals.

The services provided by the Division include: –

  • Maintaining the integrity of wiring systems and their equipment through timely and meticulous electrical inspections.
  • Processing applications for inspections of domestic, commercial or industrial electrical installations.
  • Inspecting all New Domestic, Commercial and Industrial Electrical Installations in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Issuing Certificates of Approval for connection by the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission.
  • Inspecting all rewired or altered installations for compliance with established standards of safety.
  • Inspecting ‘Disconnected Installations’ for ‘re-connection’ purposes.
  • Inspecting High Voltage Installations.
  • Visiting scenes of fires upon requests from the Police; the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission, Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services or Insurance Companies to carry out investigations to determine if the fire was due to an electrical fault.
  • Attending court proceeding that may arise from an official investigation, when summoned to give evidence.

Required Documents for Electrical Professionals Conducting / Undertaking Work

  • Copy of the national examination council certificate (industrial electrician) or equivalent certification.
  • Copy of the national identification card
  • Copy of the birth certificate (machine generated)
  • Three passport size photos (red background)
  • Letter of recommendation from employer or another licensed wireman certifying at least three-year experience in the field of electrical installation works.
  • Copy of an official document with the applicant’s name address not more than three (3) months old e.g. utility bill.

Application Process

  • Once completed, forms can be returned by the applicant (owner/occupier) or the Wireman.
  • If submitted by the applicant, you must present your Identification card and the Wireman’s license.
  • If application is submitted by the Wireman, a copy of the applicant’s (owner/occupier’s) ID must be attached to the form.
  • The completed application form is verified by staff and a voucher is prepared for payment to be made.
  • Payment must be made to the cashier at the Treasury located at the Victor E Bruce Financial Complex in Scarborough.

  • This receipt should now be returned to the Electrical Inspectorate for inspection to be carried out. Upon completion of an inspection a certificate is issued for the applicant to take to the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission for electricity connection.
