BHP Billiton to hold stakeholders sessions in Tobago

BHP Billiton will be conducting a stakeholder’s information session in Tobago in connection with environmental impact assessment for the company’s oil exploration in the waters off north Tobago.

This was revealed by THA Chief Secretary Orville London during yesterday’s (June 1, 2016) post Executive Council media briefing at the Calder Hall Administrative Complex.

“As you know BHP is doing some exploration wells on some deep water blocks, some outside of south Trinidad and some outside of north Tobago,” London said, adding that representatives of BHP Billiton, and contractors for the project, will attend the session.

The first meeting is scheduled for June 9 at Speyside Community Centre from 5.30 p.m. Tourism stakeholders are also invited to attend.

“There will, of course, be other opportunities for other stakeholders to interface and to share their recommendations with respect to this very significant activity,” London stated.

According to BHP’s president of exploration David Rainey, Trinidad and Tobago’s deep offshore waters represent a “Tier I” prospect for BHP Billiton. A Tier 1 prospect is a petroleum system that has at least 5 billion barrels of oil in place and can deliver 100,000 barrels of oil per day.
