The Patience Hill Road has been refurbished and a new roundabout, the first in Tobago was constructed and commissioned on Friday (March 9 2012) in anticipation of the opening of the multi million Scarborough General Hospital at Signal Hill on Holy Thursday (April 5).

The project was completed at a cost of $4.2 million, some $.2 million less than budgeted by the Division of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (DIPU). The roundabout will ensure the smooth flow of traffic leading to the new hospital that is located on a small plateau eastward.

While BBFL Consultant was responsible for the design, the labour was provided by the Division and Seereeram Bros Ltd was contracted to supply 222 tons of asphalt mix for the road.

A proud Secretary of the DIPU Assemblyman Hilton Sandy told guests at the commissioning that the project was the result of the hard work of his staff. “What you see here today is Tobagonians contributing to Tobago and shows that we can do it if we try,” Sandy added.

Before cutting the red ribbon THA Chief Secretary Orville London said the project was a true symbol of partnering, adding that “true development cannot take place unless there is meaningful partnership.” He also paid tribute to the “much maligned Development Department workers” for delivering a first class project”. He said he had seen their work throughout Tobago in constructing brace walls, box drains and culverts which could compete with any in the country.

London urged the DIPU to continue to use the concept of the project which proved that workers of the Assembly can work and produce as any other worker in other areas of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Chief Secretary disclosed that the Executive Council and Administrators in the nine divisions will be meeting in two weeks to review and evaluate what has been done in the past five months.
