Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles believes the education sector “will eventually drive the development” of Tobago.

He made the statement at yesterday’s (August 21) post Executive Council media briefing at Victor E. Bruce Financial Complex, Scarborough.

Charles, in his capacity as Secretary of Education, Innovation and Energy, hosted a breakfast meeting with past teachers and school administrators, along with other education and THA officials, on August 15.

The meeting was held at Mount Irvine Bay Resort.

The Chief Secretary said his Division is focused on enhancing the effectiveness of Tobago’s schools.

He said the meeting helped share ideas and recommendations that will assist the Division in formulating an educational path for Tobago’s school-age population.

“That meeting focused on educational strategies and approaches to continue to raise the level of school effectiveness, and [to] continue to raise the level of our students,” Charles said.

He said human resources help develop an island or country.

“…And therefore it is vital that we pay attention to this sector and ensure in all possible ways that we develop a very robust educational system,” Charles added.

He said he values the input of the former teachers, who can contribute to policy decision-making. The meeting touched on teaching patriotism to students, emphasising reading, and developing systems of accountability in the education sector.

Charles said “a small subcommittee will be convened” to continue the conversation, and to determine how these past educators can continue to give back to Tobago “through the educational system”.
