Repairs have already been completed at several of the 34 schools earmarked for upgrades as part of the School Repair Programme.

This was confirmed by Secretary of the Division of Education, Youth Affairs, and Sport Huey Cadette at yesterday’s (August 17) post Executive Council media briefing.

“Work has already begun at the various locations across the island, and at some locations work has already been completed,” Cadette said.

The Division received requests for expanded facilities from a number of schools, the Secretary revealed.

“With the support of UDeCOTT, the Division has embarked on a project to expand facilities at Lambeau Anglican, Signal Hill Government Primary, Whim Anglican, Hope Anglican, and Patience Hill Government Primary,” Cadette said.

“The duration of this project is three months, with expected completion in November with a total cost of $19 million dollars. Four of the five schools, because of where the wings will be located, there will be no disruption to regular school.”

Cadette said a new wing is also being constructed at Bishop’s High School, and the Tobago House of Assembly has contributed more than $4 million to the project.

The new wing will include four classrooms and two offices, and construction is expected to be completed by December 2016.

During the July/August vacation period, work began in 34 of the island’s schools, including Happy Haven and the School for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, two early childhood centres, 23 primary schools, and seven secondary schools, at a total cost of $15 million.

Repairs should be completed before school resumes on September.
