Sporting Benefits

Everyone has a choice to show will and determination, or to give up according to Carolyn Daniel-Smith, chairman of the Tobago Secondary Schools Basketball Committee.

Daniel-Smith’s encouraging the island’s young basketballers to stay positive during adversity in order to achieve success.

“If you run into a wall don’t turn around and give up, figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.”

She was speaking at Thursday’s launch of the Secondary Schools Basketball League Tobago Zone at the Shaw Park Hard Court.

Cherry-Ann Rollocks-Hackett, School Supervisor III at the Division of Education, Innovation and Energy, also spoke at the launch. She said the world of sport had many benefits to students, including fostering teamwork.

“The basketball programme is part of our wider focus on extracurricular activities and sports in education.  So when we talk about participation, we are also expecting that you will… your affinity as far as teamwork and camaraderie would improve as you work together in your various teams.”

Mrs. Rollocks-Hackett said this will ensure that the schools are well represented. Eight secondary schools across the island will be competing for the league title.
