The Division of Food Production, Forestry and Fisheries is notifying the public of the dangers of the invasive Giant African Snail.  It is known to consume a variety of plant species including vegetable crops and leguminous crops and is also a potential vector of the rat lung worm that causes eosinophilic meningitis in humans.

The snail is identified by a reddish brown shell with cream longitudinal stripes while the soft body is brown.

Persons are advised to check the undercarriage and vehicle tyres for snails, prior to travelling from Trinidad, use plastic gloves when removing or destroying snails, and wash produce before consumption. If you see the Giant African Snail, contact the Food Crop Production Unit at 639-4616.
