Encore For ‘Bitter Cassava’

The Tobago Performing Arts Company (TPAC) has answered the call for an encore of its debut of the theatrical production ‘Bitter Cassava’. The production is set to go on a five-day tour, starting in Tobago and ending in Trinidad.

The drama, written by Dr. Lester Efebo Wilkinson, is scheduled for stages at three venues, starting tomorrow (Saturday, May 14th) from 7 p.m. at Shaw Park Complex.

‘Bitter Cassava’ features some of Tobago’s top creative talent, and incorporates traditions of Trinidad and Tobago’s folk theatre, music and dance. Cast members are excited about a “memorable” performance, which has been receiving positive reviews.

Lead actress, Cheryshe La Touche, portrays the character Betty-Lou Blondell in the play. She said the characters were relatable, which made it easy to engage the audience.

It is a timeless piece. It can be played twenty years from now and it will hold an effect because everybody can find a Justina, Sam, Betty, in their own community,” she said.

Principle Dancer Darcelle Kirk, who portrays the character Jean, said the play illustrated many emotions as the story is being told. She added that audience members should expect a great performance when they come out.

The play is very touching…And I know that people who come to see the play actually feel the same way that we feel, and it’s intense,” she said.

Following the showing at Shaw Park, the tour continues in Trinidad at Naparima Bowl, San Fernando (May 28th-29th), and then Queen’s Hall, Port of Spain (June 3rd-4th).
