Language Love

The ability to speak a foreign language is encouraged in schools. It connects cultures, and broadens your access to career and development opportunities.

In Tobago, foreign language teacher Abeni Taylor—who in 2014 founded the School of Foreign Language Tobago—is combining her love of languages and teaching for the benefit of the island’s children. She’s provided in-person and online classes, and other activities, such as a summer camp.

Now, Taylor has launched The Foreign Language Bookstore and Resource Center at Taylor Drive, Carnbee—the only one of its kind in the country.

From teaching several classes for students as young as three-years-old to secondary school… I started printing my own resources to better teach the classes. I was like, I’m creating these resources, why not [create] books and games to make it fun and interesting. So that is how this came about,” she said.

The bookstore caters to learners of all age groups, with Spanish, French and English books and resources that cater to various levels of language proficiency. The center also offers printing, laminating services, and photocopying services.

Taylor said she’s accomplished this goal through commitment and self-discipline. As an educator, she has been recognised on several occasions for her contributions to the island. She received a National Youth Award in 2019, as well as the 2021 Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) Young Teacher of the Year Award for the Tobago District.
