Only One Earth

Protecting and restoring our natural environment is everyone’s duty. Activities like beach cleanups, tree planting, home gardening and choosing recycled products over Styrofoam and plastic containers have a positive impact on the environment.

World Environment Day (June 5th) was celebrated on the weekend. It’s the United Nations’ primary vehicle for fostering awareness and action to protect the environment.

The 2022 theme is ‘Only One Earth’. It highlights the triple planetary threat facing the planet: climate change, habitat loss (and the threat of species extinction) and pollution. These are issues that require everyone to contribute towards protecting our environment in the face of natural and manmade disasters.

This year’s World Environment Day campaign encouraged collective, transformative action to protect our planet. Here are three practical ways you can help keep the environment clean.

  1. Reuse products: Use reusable containers and bags rather than one-use, disposable plastic products
  2. Grow Food Locally: The Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development has consistently encouraged residents to plant their own produce. Alongside the obvious advantages of growing your own food, planting reduces the commercial transportation of food items that require pesticides to preserve them. These pesticides add to air pollution
  3. Distribute garbage consciously: It may sound simple, but use a proper garbage can. Don’t throw trash out of your car windows, or in streets, drains, empty lots or other vacant areas

Let’s think and take responsibility for our actions to help preserve the environment.
