Tobago is seeking to introduce a four-year road resurfacing plan that will improve the island’s road networks.

Secretary of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment Kwesi Des Vignes said this is because  a number of major roads on the island are in need of repair.

“The challenge that we’re facing,” Des Vignes said, “is that a lot of the road resurfacing was done in the 2006-2008 period. It means that the average lifespan of our roads, the ten-year period has lapsed. So we’re now seeing a lot of our main roads experiencing a lot of wear and tear and failed asphalt.”

He said the Division is considering a concrete paving method.

“It’s done throughout the Caribbean and throughout the world as well, to use concrete instead of asphalt in paving. We’re looking at how we can expand the lifespan of our roads.”

Des Vignes said the Division is to get assistance from the Programme for Upgrading Roads Efficiency Unit (PURE) to recycle asphalt.

“So we’re looking at recycled asphalt and we’re looking at concrete paving, and we’re looking at different ways we can use concrete to give us a good finish on our surfaces.
