Road safety, especially near schools, will be a big priority for Tobago in the next few weeks.

At yesterday’s post Executive Council media briefing at the Administrative Complex, Calder Hall, Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (DIPU) Gary Melville said this month, the Division will install speed bumps and signs in several areas used by school children.

Melville said: “The Division has worked to improve the road safety conditions in the vicinity of our schools, and to create safe pedestrian zones for children attending schools. That initiative will continue in the coming weeks.”

“We expect to install 34 speed bumps with related signage at a number of primary schools throughout the island.”

According to the Secretary this will ensure the safety of students in these areas. He noted that the island has “a very large motoring population, and not everyone drives in the most careful manner”.

“The Division will also acquire and install 25 concave mirrors at various areas around the island,” Melville said. “This is to aid in enhancing the level of road security, predictability and safety [in areas] where the visibility for motorists is not at the required level for safety.”

Melville said such mirrors have been vandalised in the past, and he asked the public to refrain from damaging them because they are critical to road safety.
