The Thompson River Bridge is one of three bridges earmarked for upgrades through the Milford Road Rehabilitation programme. Secretary of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment Kwesi Des Vignes confirmed the Thompson River Bridge will be expanded.
“It’s currently a one-lane bridge, “Des Vignes said, “and we are looking to expand that of course to two lanes, have it reinforced, so that it could support up to ten-wheeler trucks and right now we have a limit on that road way. We don’t want any vehicles over five tonnes on that particular bridge,” he said.
The contract has already been awarded by project manager NIDCO (the National Infrastructure Development Company). The project should begin later this month.
He added that the Infrastructure Division is working on a bypass route for the bridge. Des Vignes said the project will help maintain the flow of vehicular traffic. The construction should take roughly 15 months.
