Tobago’s young athletes can achieve whatever they set their minds to.
That’s the opinion of Lisa Beckles, who facilitated a recent comprehensive life skills training workshop for several of Tobago’s emerging athletes.
Beckles said the knowledge the young athletes gained at the workshop—which ran from April 8-10 at the Victor E. Bruce Financial Complex in Scarborough—will help them improve their lives.
“I would want them to leave with the understanding that they have all the resources just like anyone else that they see at large on the world scale,” Beckles said, “and that they can achieve anything that they desire.”
The workshop was hosted by the Tobago House of Assembly’s Division of Sport and Youth Affairs. It was aimed at providing the athletes with the tools they will need to prepare for the future.
The training included communication, goal setting, understanding personal identity, employment skills, financial management and entrepreneurship.
Carifta swimming medallist Ornella Walker, 18, said she enjoyed the session.
“We learned many things about personality traits,” she said, “financial things to go through, how it can affect us as student athletes, loans—how we can take them—going about resume writing and how we can proceed as student athletes [in] getting jobs.”
