Condolences on the passing of Makandal Daaga

On behalf of the Tobago House of Assembly and the people of Tobago, I extend sincerest condolences to the family, friends and admirers of Makandal Daaga and the members of the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) on the death of one of the country’s most influential leaders.

Although he never held high political office, Makandal Daaga’s impact on the social and economic landscape of this country is indisputable. Many of us remember the fervour with which we embraced his vision, and the power, passion and persuasiveness of his addresses as he mobilised the people and forced the country to re-evaluate its basic principles and, eventually, re-fashion itself.

Makandal Daaga’s lifelong commitment to a Trinidad and Tobago where there is equity for all, regardless of race, religion, social station or geographical location should continue to inspire us and perhaps our greatest tribute to him would be our contribution to the achievement of those objectives which he pursued throughout his life.

May his soul rest in peace.

Orville London,
Chief Secretary
Tobago House of Assembly.
