Increasing Disaster Awareness

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) continues to work towards establishing a disaster-ready island so that residents are able to support the work of disaster management agencies.

This is being spearheaded through initiatives that contribute to increased awareness and building competencies.

The Division of Sport and Youth Affairs is hosting a Disaster Preparedness and Management Workshop, which began on August 26th, at the Calder Hall Community Centre. The 5 day workshop will end on August 30th and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The workshop’s objective is to ensure that youth, ages 18 to 29, understand their role in actively mitigating and taking control of emergency situations. As a result, more families and the communities in which they reside will have the capacity to adequately respond in the face of a disaster.

The workshop is being led by the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) with the aim of empowering individuals on the ground in north Tobago.

The sessions will feature lectures and interactive presentations on several topics including shelter management and radio operation.
