The leaders of political parties which contested the last Assembly elections on January 21 2013 will meet tomorrow (Tuesday 7th January 2014) to discuss the issue of self governance for Tobago.
Chief Secretary Orville London invited the leaders and two of their representatives to the meeting which starts at 10 a.m. at the Mount Irvine Bay Hotel. Political leader of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) Ashworth Jack, political leader of the Platform of Truth Hochoy Charles and chairman of the Tobago Council of the People’s National Movement (PNM) Neil Wilson have confirmed their attendance at the meeting.
In his letter of invitation London told the leaders that “Tobagonians continue to be frustrated in their efforts to achieve the level of autonomy which they deserve and, for which they have fought, over many years”.
He stressed that the issue of Tobago’s autonomy must be brought to a satisfactory conclusion within the next 12 months and said he believed that all Tobagonians, including the decision makers in the political area, have a responsibility to collaborate in the achievement of the desired objectives, during that timeframe.
London said the meeting will initiate discussions on a collaborative approach to Tobago’s continuing struggle for the level of autonomy befitting an equal partner in the sovereign democratic state of Trinidad and Tobago.
