A field of 120 golfers from across the region will tee off for a good cause this weekend at the 2016 Chief Secretary’s Charity Golf Tournament.

The first tee for the event will be at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday (June 18) at the Magdalena Grand Beach Resort and Golf Club.

Tournament organiser Jeffrey Azar said the young golfers will also be competing.

“For the event 12 junior golfers will also be participating this year,” Azar said ahead of the 2016 edition. Participants will come from various Caribbean islands, including Trinidad, Jamaica, Antigua, Barbados, and St. Kitts.

He added: “Many golfers come over from other Caribbean islands to participate. We have one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the Caribbean.”

Azar said the event has raised Tobago’s profile as a golf destination, as golfers learn about Tobago’s scenic courses and beautiful landscape as a travel destination.

The annual tournament started 15 years ago, and raises funds for various causes each year. In 2015, the two-day tournament brought in proceeds of $82,500. Donations were made to Canaan’s Night Care Home for the Aged and the St Vincent de Paul Home for the Aged in Mason Hall.

The Night Care Home received vouchers for a washing machine, dryer and freezer, while the St Vincent de Paul Home got three special electric beds and a complete security camera system.

Over fourteen sponsors are involved in the tournament, including the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Carib, and MI4 Security.

On June 17 there will be a Welcome Cocktail Reception for the Chief Secretary’s Charity Golf Tournament at the Magdalena’s Golf Club, followed by the tournament on June 18 and 19. The event ends with a Gala Dinner and Prize Giving Ceremony on Father’s Day (June 19).
