Survey of Women And Children

The launch of a training programme for a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) took place on March 2nd at the Central Statistical Office (CSO), Port of Spain. The survey will be conducted for the collection of data on women and children in Trinidad and Tobago, as a basis for policy decisions and programme interventions.

Statistician in the Department of Planning, Desmond Perry, is leading 12 female Tobago field workers, who will be among more than 70 field staff trained over a period of five weeks, from March 2nd to April 3rd.

Perry said workers will conduct face-to-face interviews on a variety of topics. “The survey covers education levels and sexuality of women, household policies, household composition and water quality.” Data will also be gathered on contraception, marital status, life satisfaction, child labour and child discipline.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is supporting the CSO of Trinidad and Tobago to implement the survey, which will begin on April 4th on both islands at 7,200 households.

UNICEF assists countries in collecting and analyzing data in order to fill data gaps for monitoring the situation of children and women through MICS, its international household survey initiative.
