Enhancing Tourism

Culture can enhance Tobago’s tourism product.

Secretary of Tourism, Culture and Transportation Nadine Stewart-Phillips said the Performing Arts Training Programme is one area that can support the growth of culture.

“…This programme was launched in May 2018, and this is geared towards the professional preparation of performers in music, dance, drumming, drama,” the Tourism Secretary stated, “and serves as a vehicle for cultural development throughout communities, youth organisations, schools, [and] special interest groups.”

She said the first cycle of the programme should be completed by November. The Arts Push Training Programme, Stewart-Phillips said, is one of the other initiatives that will support efforts to boost culture.

“This is a more advanced programme, and [it] facilitates industry practitioners, knowledge bearers and academics, more or less bringing them up to date with industry best practices and new global trends.”

The Secretary said participation increased in most of the courses offered in the Arts Push Programme this year.

Those courses include dance and drama, contemporary African and Caribbean folk dance, West African drum and dance, stiltwalking, costume design and minimalist theatre.
