Calypso Rose’s awards and memorabilia will soon be on display in her native Tobago.

The items will be part of the Calypso Rose and Mighty Shadow Museum Exhibit to be displayed at a newly-refurbished building at Fort King George, which once housed the Tobago House of Assembly’s Department of Culture.

The museum will highlight the works, life, music and achievements of two of the island’s cultural icons.

This is the fruit of discussions between representatives from the Tobago House of Assembly and Calypso Rose, given name Rose McCartha Linda Sandy Lewis. The agreement was confirmed by Secretary of Tourism, Culture and Transportation Nadine Stewart-Phillips.

“Well this has become a reality and the Calypso Rose and Mighty Shadow Museum Exhibit will be launched in the month of March 2019,” Stewart-Phillips said at last week’s (Feb 27) post Executive Council media briefing.

But before the official event, the THA and Riddums Productions Ltd will collaborate to host the “I Thank Thee, Forever Young” concert at Shaw Park Complex on March 7.

Stewart-Phillips added: “Calypso Rose has gifted the THA her entire archive spanning the beginning of her career to present. It includes all her awards as well. Additionally, the family of the late Dr. Winston Bailey, the ‘Mighty Shadow’, are desirous of having his archive on display as well,” she said.

The museum will showcase the works, life, music and achievements of both Calypso Rose and Mighty Shadow. It will highlight the role of the calypsonians as storytellers, historians and writers.

“The project will be implemented through the use of theatre techniques adopted from various practitioners,” the Tourism Secretary said, “and we are very excited for the gains that will be achieved from such a project, which is huge, and of course this will be marketed domestically, regionally and internationally.”
